I start with a warning: this review is about a Russian group. Go on only if you are open for something new and don’t mind when it’s not sung in English.

Undervud is the best thing that Russia has to offer in the music scene. Well, apart from Aquarium and DDT. However these two bands has their best days in the past. Ironically, the 2 young doctors who formed the group in Moscow came from Ukraine. They are called “the most important import from Ukraine” (is Hiddink then the most important import from Holland?).

Their style is a mosaic of a cheerful light rock, rock ’n’ roll, rockabilly, beat etc. It is considerably retro, but it sounds up-to-date and is very carefully produced. The most important is, that the music itself is excellently composed. Fairly short songs contain at least a few contaminating melody lines and – yes, sometimes even thrilling counterpoints. That’s why they keep fascinating you, even after quite a few listens. Let’s consider it an early Beatles approach.

After that being said, I must admit this: if you understand Russian, you will enjoy double. The lyrics have intelligent humour, associative poetry, Dadaism, surrealism, a little domestic philosophy… very fresh and stimulating. It reminds me of Paul Elluard who went rock ’n’ roll.

Here, with pleasure, an example from “Herpes”, without any literary pretence of course, only to show you the context:

Wet snow, cold, herpes I kiss, you bear May be, you have pain, But you’re happy, anyway

The most beautiful sickness The virus brings you from nowhere Herpes, herpes, I want your cold, my fairy Etc.

Or listen to the song “God save the digital connection”. It is written in a mixture of two languages: Ukrainian and English, which of itself might be considered as at least an extravagant combination.

Well, for those who is still interested, a short biography of the group. The most important persons in this formation are Vladimir Tkachenko and Maxim Kucherenko. This Ukrainians have already passed the “rock ’n’ roll age of Christ”. After a few attempts to break through in Ukraine they signed in 2000 a contract with a new century and a record label in Moscow. This was the right occasion to stop their doctors’ career, and direct their potentials on music and poetry. They don’t really play a main stream music, but they still get a fair airplay on Russian radio. They perform once in a while in the better clubs in Moscow and are actually quite popular. However, it is limited by the boundaries of the Russian-speaking Eastern part of Europe.

The name Undervud is a bastardization of “Underwood”, which was a well known American manufacturer of type writers. Underwood was taken over by Italian Olivetti in 1960s. After that, the name itself eventually disappeared from the market. It’s a shame, because it had a certain cult status. For sure in Russia, where the machines were imported in the beginning of the 20th century, before the Revolution. The type writers were adored by the Russian intelligentsia because of their reliability (well, at least comparing to the Russian ones). After the Revolution they were thoroughly hidden by their owners, as far as possible from the eyes of the KGB. People were not allowed to have any instrument for typing or copying. Many dissident works were typed on these antique machines on the Russian attics in 1960s and 1970s.

So, this is what the name Undervud radiate: a little old-fashioned but reliable and elegant, familiar but unruly and fresh. By the way, “Opium for the people” is the way how the Bolsheviks labelled the religion… What would that kind of title be supposed to emanate?

The “Opium…” is the 4th album of the group. The first 3 were actually piece after piece fantastic as well. It will not be easy for you to get hold of their CD’s. Their record label doesn’t have a distribution channel in West Europe (yet?). I myself bought them in Moscow. Ik begin met een waarschuwing: deze recensie gaat over een Russische groep. Ga verder alleen als je openstaat voor iets nieuws, en het niet erg vindt als er niet in het Engels gezongen wordt.

Undervud is naar mijn mening de beste wat Rusland momenteel muzikaal te bieden heeft. Nou, er is nog Aquarium en DDT, maar deze bands hebben hun hoogste tijden al in het verleden gehad. Ironisch, maar de 2 jonge artsen die Undervud in Moskou gevormd hebben, komen zelf uit Oekraïne. Men noemt deze muzikale gastarbeiders “de belangrijkste import uit Oekraïne” (is Hiddink dan de belangrijkste import uit Nederland?).

Hun stijl is een mozaïek van een opgewekte light rock, rock ’n’ roll, rockabilly, beat etc. Het is behoorlijk retro qua stijl, maar klinkt modern en is verzorgd geproduceerd. Maar belangrijker nog, de muziek zelf is uitstekend gecomponeerd. De vrij korte liedjes bevatten minstens 3 leuke en vaak aanstekelijke melodietjes, en ja, zelfs spannende contrapunten. Daardoor blijven zij boeien, ook na meerdere luisterbeurten. Zeg maar, de vroegere Beatles aanpak.

Nu moet het gezegd worden, als je ook de teksten verstaat, geniet je dubbel. Veel intelligente humor, associatieve poëzie, dadaïsme, surrealisme, een beetje tuin en keuken gefilosofeer… erg fris en stimulerend. Het doet me wel eens denken aan Paul Eluard die rock ’n’ roll is gegaan.

Hier doe ik graag een voorbeeld uit “Herpes”, zonder enige literaire pretentie natuurlijk, puur om de context weer te geven:

Of luister naar de nummer “God save the digital connection”. Het is geschreven in een mengsel van 2 talen: Oekraïens en Engels, wat op zich al minstens een opvallende combinatie genoemd mag worden.

Voor diegene die nog steeds geïnteresseerd zijn, even in het kort de geschiedenis van de groep. De belangrijkste personen van deze formatie zijn Vladimir Tkachenko en Maxim Kucherenko. Deze Oekraïners hebben net de “rock ’n’ roll lijftijd van Christus” gepasseerd. Na een aantal pogingen om muzikaal door te breken in Oekraïne hebben zij in 2000 een contract met de nieuwe eeuw én een muziekmaatschappij in Moskou getekend. Dat was de aanleiding om met de artsencarrière definitief te breken, zich in Moskou te vestigen en volledig op muziek en poëzie te richten (behalve muziek publiceren zij ook gedichten). Alhoewel zij geen main stream spelen, worden zij toch graag door de Russische radiostations uitgezonden. Zij treden af en toe op in de betere clubs van Moskou en zijn behoorlijk populair, al beperkt het zich tot de Russisch sprekende gebied in het Oosten van Europa.

De naam Undervud is een verbastering van de naam “Underwood”. Underwood was een Amerikaanse fabrikant van typemachines. De firma is ergens in de jaren 60 van de vorige eeuw door de Italiaanse Olivetti overgenomen, waarna de naam zelf is uiteindelijk van de markt verdwenen. Jammer, want deze naam heeft een bepaalde cultstatus. Zeker in Rusland, waar deze machines in het begin van de 20-ste eeuw, vóór de Revolutie, geïmporteerd werden. De machines werden door de Russische intelligentsia geliefd om hun degelijkheid (nou, in ieder geval in vergelijking met de Russische typemachines). Na de Revolutie werden zij door de eigenaars zorgvuldig verborgen, zo ver mogelijk weg van de ogen van KGB. Men mocht toen geen enkele machine bezitten waar je het getypte woord kon produceren of vermenigvuldigen… Op die oude machines werden op zolders nog in de jaren 60 en 70 van de 20ste eeuw meerdere dissidente stukken getypt…

Dit straalt dus de naam Undervud uit: een beetje ouderwets, maar elegant en betrouwbaar, vertrouwd maar tegendraads en fris. Trouwens, de naam van de album – “Opium for the people” - is hoe de bolsjewieks de religie bestempelden. Wat zou deze naam bedoeld zijn om uit te stralen?

De “Opium…” is de 4-de album van de groep. De eerste 3 waren eigenlijk ook stuk voor stuk fantastisch. Ik meen dat het niet mee zou vallen om de CD van de groep te bemachtigen. De platenlabel heeft momenteel geen distributiekanalen in West Europa. Ik heb de cd’s zelf in Moskou gekocht.
